Research - Intersatellite links
related papers by Lloyd Wood.
Lloyd Wood and his colleagues argue in favor of breaking the "bent pipe" system architecture in which the satellite is seen as a relay point between two ground stations. They would add inter-satellite communication links and routers to decouple the up and downlink locations.

Work on networking for space and between satellites, and the topic of intersatellite links will crop up repeatedly. In my case, getting two degrees, based on studying satellite constellations with intersatellite links, and then continuing on the topic is probably a bit much.

Intersatellite links, when they permit traffic to be shared among several satellites in different orbital positions, provide the operator with some latitude in the positioning of his satellites.
