Lloyd William Wood, 82, formerly of Columbia, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at his home in New Market. He was the husband of Shirley Wood.
Born Dec. 31, 1927, in Geneva, Ill., he was the son of the late Walter and Martha Wood, of Batavia, Ill.
Mr. Wood was a retired naval architect. After serving the Army in post-World War II occupied Japan, he returned to college and earned his BSE degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from the University of Michigan.
His 40-plus-year career involved work on all types of naval ships in scientific section tasks, specifications, general arrangements and design management. His profession took him from coast to coast: Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock in Chester, Pa.; Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, Calif.; Electric Boat in New London, Conn.; and Mare Island again. He and his family moved to Columbia in the 1970s, when he worked for NAVSEC and later for NAVSEA in the Washington area.
His career also took him below, 566 fathoms deep in the Pacific Ocean for the successful dive of the Bathyscaphe Trieste in 1965. He was a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers for 60 years.
His interests included genealogy, computers, clock-building, model railroading, and -- always -- his family. He doted on his dachshund, Lizzie.
Survivors in addition to his beloved wife of 57 years include a daughter, Susan Alff of Raleigh, N.C.; three sons, David Wood (Patty) of Taneytown, Paul Wood of New Market and John Wood of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Ted Alff and Dawn and Brian Wood. He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Horna.
A memorial service is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Hampton Inn and Suites Frederick/Fort Detrick, 1565 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.
Arrangements are by Harry W. Witzke Family Funeral Home in Ellicott City, with interment in a family ceremony at the Columbia Memorial Park, Clarksville.
